This is a midrange smartphone, I can already tell. Below are my thoughts about the Samsung Galaxy J4+
Networking and communication
This phone supports GSM, HSPA and LTE network technology. That is 2G, 3G and 4G. Call quality is great here thanks to that clear microphone and call speaker it has.
I love to see a 3.5mm jack which with you experience Dolby Atmos sound. Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, hotspot, Bluetooth 4.2, A2DP, LE and GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS are also wireless features the J4+ comes with. You also get to decide if you want a model with NFC or not.
Design and build
The design and build of Samsung Galaxy J4 Plus looks and feels very familiar. Looking at it side to side with the J6+ you will notice only one difference. That the latter has a dual camera set up. Check out Samsung Galaxy J4 Plus at Phone Place Kenya. It (the J4+) has a very simple and clean finish, with one very interesting detail Samsung has reorganized and that is the fingerprint scanner which this time is side mounted.
So to unlock your phone using this scanner you will need to rest your unlock finger on the power button which doubles up as the fingerprint scanner as well. The volume rocker is on the opposite side. There are two symmetrical bezels on the front part. With the bottom one kept clean while the top bezel has the usual call speaker, selfie camera, sensors and J line’s very personal front facing flash. On the back we see a clean finish with that primary camera, LED flash and Samsung branding. It has these dimensions 161.4 x 76.9 x 7.9 mm and weighs 178 grams the J4+.
Display and camera
Sometimes Samsung leave us asking questions we can’t even make sense of. Like: why would Samsung in 2015 include an AMOLED display on J series smartphones but slap us with an IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen on Samsung Galaxy J4+? Not that an IPS LCD display is bad or poor in any way but, we would have expected it to be the other way round. AMOLED in 2018 and IPS LCD in 2015.
It is what it is anyway. It is a 6.0 inches panel with these specifications: 91.4cm2, ~73.6% screen-to-body ratio, 720 x 1480 pixels resolution, 18.5:9 ratio and ~274 ppi density. This display is bright mostly, a good attribute for outdoor visibility. And if it is good outside then it got to hold up just fine when not. Good colors here and all that but, an AMOLED panel would have done us more good.
Here is a simple conversation.
Other brands: A phone must have 3 or more cameras.
Samsung: I think not. Let us keep things simple with the Samsung Galaxy J4 Plus and include two camera. One on the front a good 5 MP, f/2.2 lens and on the back we shall include a 13 MP, f/1.9, 28mm (wide), AF shooter. We can make things even more interesting by throwing in an LED flash for the front facing camera as well since for one, it is our trademark for the J line and also because we want selfie lovers to take pictures regardless of the lighting conditions. Then 1080p@30fps video recording will be the case for both lenses.
And story came to pass. This is just what we get with the Samsung Galaxy J4+’s cameras.
Performance and memory
This one runs on Android 8.1 (Oreo) with a Qualcomm MSM8917 Snapdragon 425 (28 nm) chipset, a Quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A53 CPU an Adreno 308 GPU. We do hope for software updates in future though.
Choose between a 32 GB with 2/3 RAM or a 16 GB with 2 GB RAM Galaxy J4+. The relatively low on board internal memories can be expanded using a Micro SD, up to 512 GB.
It does come with a Non-removable Li-Ion 3300 mAh battery that should last up to a whole day of usage if on two on mixed and/or balanced usage.
I will mention that with its 3.5mm jack you will get Dolby Atmos sound experience when listening to your content via wired headphones. Great sound quality.
