Now this is the base model of the TECNO Spark 3. See image below for table of the beta Spark 3 and the Spark 3 Pro.
As you can see, the difference between the Spark 3 and Spark 3 Pro is that the Pro has 4G network tecnology unline the former. The two share in every aspect but that. There for read my review on the Spark 3 Pro at Phone Place Kenya for the base model details, keeping in mind that the base model has no support for 4G network.
That being said, this article is for the Spark 3 of 1GB RAM and 16GB internal memory. Dear TECNO, again- please work on your naming system to avoid all this misleading, thank you. It still is a great budget smartphone regardless. Let us see what goodies it comes with.
Design and build
All three smartphones have the same design and build which I find unwise given the also very unclear naming of these smartphones as mentioned earlier. It has a vertical camera orientation on the top right corner with TECNO branding on the bottom right. We also see a rear mounted fingerprint scanner on the back which TECNO claims can scan your finger even when it is oily- you will be the judge of that. The front has a wide notch (can be hidden under settings to assume an un-notched bezel) that houses the front facing camera, sensor and call speaker as well. We also see its FULL VIEW display panel on the front.
Display and camera
TECNO Spark 3 has a decent 6.2 inches IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen. I say decent because it has good visibility whether indoors or otherwise. Its 19:9 aspect ratio allows for a wide view panel hence exciting user experience. It boasts a 1500 x 720 pixels resolution this one- for which it is allowed to given its price. And yes, this display has a wide notch.
Its primary camera is a 13MP lens that shoots okay 1080p@30fps videos. There isn’t so much sophistication with it until you mention some of the AI functions TECNO assures exist. Until then you have a good camera (for its price) with a special feature of being able to control the brightness of the LED flash it comes with.
The 8MP front facing camera it has is a better catch I have to say, images on it are impressive especially in well light scenes.
Performance and memory
Unlike the other two versions this one, TECNO Spark 3 runs on Android 8.1 Go Edition with HiOS.it is an MTK Device hence its MediaTek MT6580 chipset and it has a Quad-core 1.3 GHz CPU.
A phone with 1GB RAM and 16 GB expandable internal storage it is. I will put it this way, with 1GB RAM, you can still do more. But heavy users may need to aim higher. Have I mentioned that the internal memory can be expanded up to 32 GB using a micro SD card? There it is. And so much joy to know that there is a dedicated slot for this function.
Well, considering the power efficient platform performance it has, TECNO Spark 3’s 3500 mAh non-removable battery should last up to two – three days depending on your usage. Very heavy users may get up to a whole day of usage.
It is a smartphone I would recommend if one is on a budget. The much you get with it overtakes the lesser and unimportant details that may be considered ‘deal breakers’- like micro USB for example instead of a Type C port. Manufacturers however should really reconsider this habit- it already is 2019, we shouldn’t be taking about micro USB anymore
